The Express Loop: How to See Ha Giang’s “Big Three” in Just 2 Days

So, you’re in Vietnam, your visa is ticking down, but your Instagram feed is full of jagged limestone peaks and winding mountain roads. You want to do the Ha Giang Loop, but you only have 48 hours.

Can it be done? Yes. Is it intense? Absolutely.

At Rabbit Hostel, we designed the 2D1N Express Loop specifically for the “time-crunched traveler.” It’s a high-octane highlight reel that hits the most iconic landmarks—the ones that made Ha Giang famous—without a single wasted mile.

Day 1: The Ascent to the Border

Route: Ha Giang City → Bac Sum Pass → Heaven’s Gate → Twin Mountains → Hmong King’s Palace → Dong Van.

We kick off early from Rabbit Hostel. Within the first hour, the air cools and the road starts to twist. You’ll conquer the Bac Sum Pass, a giant set of switchbacks that serves as your “welcome” to the high mountains.

The Morning Views

Your first major photo op is Quan Ba Heaven’s Gate. Stand at the top with a coffee in hand and look down over the Twin Mountains (two perfectly symmetrical hills nestled in the valley). It looks like a painting, but the wind on your face proves it’s real.

The Afternoon History

After a local lunch in Yen Minh, we head deeper into the Dong Van Karst Plateau. Before reaching our beds for the night, we stop at the Hmong King’s Palace in Sa Phin. This century-old mansion was built using Chinese and French architecture for a powerful Hmong leader. It’s haunting, beautiful, and full of history.

Overnight: We stay in Dong Van Town. Grab some street food in the Ancient Quarter and rest up—Day 2 is the big one.

Day 2: The King of Passes

Route: Ma Pi Leng Pass → Sky Pass → Nho Que River → Mau Due → Return to Ha Giang.

If you only came for one thing, this is it. Ma Pi Leng Pass is known as the “King of Passes” in Vietnam. It’s a road literally carved into the side of a limestone cliff, with a 1,000-meter drop-off to the river below.

The Adventure Highs

  • The Sky Pass: For the brave, we hike a section of the Sky Path. It’s a narrow trail that offers 360-degree views of the abyss.
  • Nho Que River: We’ll descend to the bottom of the Tu San Canyon (the deepest in Southeast Asia) for a boat trip. Looking up at the massive cliffs you just rode over is a perspective shift you won’t forget.

The Rugged Shortcut

To make it back to Ha Giang City in time for your night bus, we take the Mau Due route. This is the “hidden” gem of the 2-day trip—the road is rugged, the limestone “rock forests” are alien-like, and there are far fewer tourists than on the main road.

Is the 2D1N Right For You?

Choose this tour if:

  • You only have a weekend or a 2-day gap in your itinerary.
  • You are okay with 6–8 hours of riding per day.
  • You want to see the “Postcard” views (Ma Pi Leng & Heaven’s Gate) above all else.

Think twice if:

  • You want to swim in waterfalls or visit the northernmost flagpole (check our 3D2N or 4D3N tours for those!).
  • You prefer a slow, relaxed pace with plenty of nap time.
